June 13, 2009 Sotheby’s in New York will hold the final sale of its highly successful spring season on June 13, 2009. The sale’s 1,217 lots (the first 330 to be sold without reserve) will include a selection of Bordeaux, Rhône and California wines, Champagne, and great value white Burgundy. It is expected to bring in excess of $1.1 million.
The section of wines sold without reserve has a total estimate of $280/390,000, roughly a third of the value of the entire sale, and offers an array of the finest wines from the best appellations and the most talented producers in Burgundy. From Raveneau, Dauvissat and Fèvre in Chablis to Rousseau in Gevrey and Leflaive in Puligny, this is a line-up of Burgundy that collectors will not want to miss. Rare large formats from Ponsot and Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey also feature here, as well as top wines from Henri Boillot.
The sale also features a wide selection of wines that are ready to drink at reasonable prices—nearly 500 lots carry a low estimate of $400 or less. Concluding the auction (lots 1116-1147) will be an offering of great value white Burgundy (seen at right). These are wines from the Mâcon appellation in southern Burgundy made by top winemaker Dominique Lafon. They are being offered in two and three case lots with estimates of $100-200 per case. “We have never offered Lafon’s Mâcons at auction before,” said Robert Sleigh, head of Sotheby’s New York Wine department, “but having tasted the wines, they offer unbeatable ‘bang for the buck’ for buyers looking for sophisticated summer drinking at a very reasonable price.”
