The Art of WWII: Propaganda or Patriotism? Manion’s International Auction House of Kansas City acquires original WWII poster collection – auction closes 4.27.09
When powerful imagery provokes partisan passion, is it propaganda or patriotism? When Pope Gregory XV established the “Sacred Congregation for Propagating the Faith” in 1622, propaganda was born -- at least by name.
Images from the Soviet Union come to mind, and WWII Germany – but what about the homefront of America in WWII? Everyone is familiar with the image of friendly ol’ Uncle Sam requesting service, or stirring period works by the American artist Norman Rockwell, but is this patriotism or propaganda? Like beauty, the answer is certainly in the eye of the beholder.
Manion’s International Auction House of Kansas City is pleased to announce the opportunity for collectors, decorators, and history enthusiasts to own an original piece of artwork from this tumultuous time through their online auction website: www.manions.com. Bids are accepted online, with the auction closing April 27, 2009.
“This material was consigned from the estate of a woman who served as Postmaster in a small Missouri town during WWII,” said Manion’s representative Mike Anderson. “These posters were rotated out of display in the small post office, and at the end of WWII she had quiet a collection.”
Since the company specializes in historic collectibles, with an emphasis on militaria, the daughter of the postmaster consigned the collection of posters with Manion’s International.
“We’re the perfect place to host such an auction,” said Anderson. “With a dedicated database of militaria collectors, and auctions closing 365 days a year, this collection will attract the most attention with Manion’s.”
