Over the past wekend of March 20-22, Anderson's Restorations gave their presentation on chair caning and other types of seat weaving along with wicker weaving.They were located just inside the main entrance where visitors could stop and watch for a few minutes before exploring the 3 story museum. The Andersons had a display of items "in process" such as rush, splint shaker tape and chair caning. This gave the children a chance to try their hand at a little weaving. They also had sample boards that had the various materials used in the different types of seating to allow interested people to see the difference side by side. Many people think of all seat weaving as "caning" and this definatly helped clear up some of that mystery for museum visitors. It also helped showing all the materials that can be used in "4 rail weaving" together since many of them can be interchanged to change the look of a chair or other item.
On Saturday & Sunday, the Museum also offered a hands on clinic for children so they could weave their own little project using yarn to do a "Rush" weave or paper to do a "splint" pattern. Very popular. Many of the older children that came through were very interested in learning so we can hope this craft will carry on.
