The conservative MS61 designation by PCGS may have been influenced the by thick, original skin which slightly mutes the lustrous surfaces. The strike details are bold throughout on this apricot-gold specimen and few would deny that this is an under-graded early half eagle. A premium quality piece in every regard (PCGS # 8103)
• Lot 177: 1803 $10 Capped Bust. Small reverse stars. ANACS graded EF45, Housed in an early generation, small ANACS holder. A surprising amount of original surfaces are retained in the protected areas of this conservatively graded--perhaps under-graded--early eagle. A few small adjustment marks are observed on Liberty's face, which is common to the issue. The coloration is a blend of brownish-purple over orange-gold surfaces, and the resulting eye appeal is memorable (PCGS # 8565)
