Unusual and original 1936 Hignett UK dog card set. This rare and original 1936 dog card set is difficult to find and very nicely illustrated.It is being sold as single breed cards from our TIAS store.
We are pleased to say that we have recently added this very nice original dog card set to our large stock of cards,postcards etc featuring dogs.The same images were used for a set for Ogdens cigarettes but this set for Hignett Bros and Co. is considerably more difficult to find.We are offering it for sale as individual breed cards at our SBAADC,(Scottish Borders Antiques and Dog Collectables) store on TIAS,(the oldest of all the Internet Antique Malls).
The set includes the following breeds....Gordon Setter, Pomeranian, Irish Setter, Bull Mastiff, Saluki, Newfoundland, Irish Terrier, Elkhound, Flat Coated Retriever, Wire Fox Terrier, English Setter, Pointer, Rough Coated Collie, Rough Coated St.Bernard, Great Dane, Foxhound, Greyhound, Deerhound, Clumber Spaniel, Old English Sheepdog, Bloodhound, Cairn Terrier, Airedale Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Bull Terrier,Sealyham Terrier, Chow Chow, Mastiff, Beagle, Kerry Blue Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Bedlington Terrier, Dalmatian, Skye Terrier, Alsatian, Smooth Fox Terrier, English Springer Spaniel, Field Spaniel, Borzoi, Welsh Springer Spaniel and Whippet.
Each card has printed text on the reverse relating to the breed pictured and the following is on the reverse of the Pomeranian card pictured above...."The Pomeranian is a member of the Spitz family, whose characteristics are a foxy head, prick ears, sharp muzzle, a stand-off coat and a curled tail. The breed, when first classified in England in 1871, was large and all white, but breeders have reduced its size to a few pounds without losing type or soundness. The colour now is very varied, and there are many whole colours and shaded varieties. In spite of their tiny size, Pomeranians make admirable house-dogs. Their bark is penetrating and rapid; they have plenty of courage, and a jaunty carriage."
Whilst no mention can be found by us of the illustrator of these cards the style is very similar to that of the famous animal artist Arthur Wardle who was born February the 5th 1864 and died on July the 16th 1949.He was a prolific artist and even at the early age of 16 he had a picture displayed at the Royal Academy in London.He is still to this day considered one of the foremost animal artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.The Totteridge XI which depicts Fox Terriers ,( which he painted in 1897) hangs in the Kennel Club in London.
